SRM can refer to two different SAP topics. They serve different parts of the supply chain:
- Supplier Relationship Management (sometimes mistakenly called “Supplier Resource Management”) is about buying from and working with suppliers.
- Stock Room Management is about storing and moving goods inside your warehouse.
1. Supplier Relationship Management
This supports procurement teams in managing suppliers and purchasing activities. Depending on the setup, it can help with:
- Finding and evaluating suppliers
- Requesting and comparing supplier quotations
- Managing contracts and purchasing terms
- Creating or processing purchase requests and orders
- Collaborating with suppliers
Example: Your company needs 500 bottles of a packaging material. The procurement team asks suppliers for prices, compares their offers, selects a supplier, and places an order. Supplier Relationship Management supports these supplier-facing and purchasing steps.
2. Stock Room Management
This supports warehouse teams in tracking goods within a warehouse, including which storage bin they are in and how they move. It can support tasks such as:
- Putting received goods into storage bins
- Picking goods for production or delivery
- Moving stock between bins
- Counting stock and correcting discrepancies
Example: The 500 bottles arrive at the factory. Warehouse staff record the receipt, place them in a specific bin, and later pick the required quantity for production. Stock Room Management supports these warehouse activities.
At a glance
| Supplier Relationship Management | Stock Room Management | |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | Who do we buy from, and under what terms? | Where is the stock, and how does it move? |
| Main users | Buyers and procurement teams | Warehouse and inventory teams |
| Focus | Suppliers, sourcing, purchasing | Storage bins, putaway, picking, stock movements |
In short: Supplier Relationship Management helps your company purchase goods from suppliers; Stock Room Management helps it manage goods after they are received.
The acronym “SRM” is context-dependent, so it’s worth checking which meaning your SAP team or system documentation intends.
